Hurricane Ida Aftermath

Dear Tulane Parent,

It’s hard to imagine that a week ago I was sitting in my office talking to a new student who was having a rough transition to college life. I reminded this student about what a special place Tulane is – today I am sitting in my hotel room in Houston reminded of all the things that make that true. Last week was a very difficult period for the Tulane community and the people of Southeast Louisiana – many of whom have suffered devastating losses. Yet, in the midst of this, I have been moved by the resilience of our students, the gratitude shown by them, the outpouring of support from our parents and families, and the hard work of our alumni, faculty and staff to make sure our students were well cared for during this challenging time. Tulane is a special place no matter where you are, and when things get rough – it’s good to be a Tulanian.

I know you have a lot of questions – some of which we don’t have complete answers to yet. But I wanted to share our FAQs page with you to provide you with everything we now know.  We will update these FAQs with new information as it becomes available.

Here are a couple of important updates for now:

  • The deadline to drop with a full refund; to add/drop classes, or to change grading to S/U is being extended by two weeks from the date that was posted in the published academic calendar for this fall.

  • Facilities Services will remediate any issues in residence halls prior to your student’s return. If their personal property has been damaged by the storm, your student will be notified.

  • We cannot allow access to our on-campus residence halls. Damage assessments are still being conducted and the mayor of New Orleans has asked residents not to return at this time. Students may apply for emergency funding to replace important items they may have left behind or to buy things needed for the next few weeks.

  • Students may apply for the donor funded emergency funding mentioned above by filling out this form. We are processing these requests as expeditiously as possible.

I want to thank you for all the kind words, messages, and posts that you’ve sent over the last week. They mean the world to us. We also deeply appreciate your patience and trust in us. You are part of what makes Tulane so special.

Sincerely,

Erica Woodley
Dean of Students
