Saltwater intrusion update Oct. 3

Tuesday, October 3, 2023 1:00 pm

Dear Tulane Community,

We continue to closely monitor the saltwater intrusion situation in the Mississippi River, which may impact New Orleans at the end of October or early November.

Currently, tap water in New Orleans remains safe to drink and use for all purposes.

We are working on plans to support our on- and off-campus students, including bottled water distribution if needed.

All university activities and operations will continue as usual. We do not plan to move to remote working or learning.

In addition, events scheduled to take place at the university in October will be held as planned. This includes all components of WAVE23, including homecoming, reunion, and Family Weekend.

We encourage everyone in the Tulane community who lives in an area that may be impacted by the saltwater intrusion to continue following local news and checking for updated FAQs with the Louisiana Department of Health as well as their parish, and to think about plans they can implement on their own.

We are closely coordinating with local and state officials on this issue, and our preparations include a focus on priority areas to keep our campuses operating – research, HVAC, food services, and other key areas. We will email again later this week with any updates.

As always, the official source of Tulane-related emergency information is tulane.edu/emergency. If you have any other questions, please email emergencyprep@tulane.edu.

Respectfully,

The Office of Emergency Preparedness & Response
