Planning for possible saltwater intrusion Sept. 26

Tuesday, September 26, 2023 10:00 a.m.

Dear Tulane Community,

We are closely monitoring the potential impact of saltwater intrusion from the Gulf of Mexico into the Mississippi River.

At this time, tap water throughout the city is safe for regular use, and we are taking proactive steps to ensure that water at our uptown and downtown campuses remains safe for all purposes, including drinking.

This saltwater intrusion poses no risk to our Northshore campus. But, according to current estimates from the Army Corp of Engineers, beginning in late October, there is a risk of saltwater exposure to New Orleans water intakes via the Mississippi River. This could affect the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans, our local water provider.

We are coordinating closely with local and state officials on this issue. We are committed to the health and safety of our community and will continue to put that first as we prepare for any possible disruption. We will provide updates as new information becomes available via email and at tulane.edu/emergency.

Respectfully,

The Office of Emergency Preparedness & Response
