What does it mean to Shelter in Place?

  • Shelter in place means staying indoors in a safe place until the threat of severe weather passes.
  • We also encourage students living off-campus to activate their personal shelter-in-place plans.

What supplies do I need to Shelter in Place?

  • Non-perishable food and snacks
  • Bottled water
  • Manual can opener
  • Flashlight & extra batteries
  • First Aid Kit
  • Supply of prescription medications
  • Radio (battery operated or hand crank)
  • Food and water for pets
  • Cash
  • Books & games

What else do I need to do to prepare?

  • Charge all electronic devices and back up batteries.
  • Fill your bathtub with water to clean and flush toilets.
  • Turn your fridge to its lowest temperature.
  • Preserve cell phone battery life.
  • Stay away from low-hanging or downed power lines.
  • Bring items from outside balconies and patios indoors.
  • Pick up litter and debris to keep catch basins clear.
  • Secure your garbage can.
  • Put important documents in a weather proof container.
  • Stay inside until officials say otherwise.
  • Check for updates on university social media pages, email, and emergency.tulane.edu.
  • Call 911 in an emergency. Call 311 for information or to report non-emergency service requests like downed trees.
  • Storms can be scary for children. Talk to your family about what’s happening, and keep games and toys on hand to entertain.
