What does it mean to Shelter in Place?
- Shelter in place means staying indoors in a safe place until the threat of severe weather passes.
- We also encourage students living off-campus to activate their personal shelter-in-place plans.
What supplies do I need to Shelter in Place?
- Non-perishable food and snacks
- Bottled water
- Manual can opener
- Flashlight & extra batteries
- First Aid Kit
- Supply of prescription medications
- Radio (battery operated or hand crank)
- Food and water for pets
- Cash
- Books & games
What else do I need to do to prepare?
- Charge all electronic devices and back up batteries.
- Fill your bathtub with water to clean and flush toilets.
- Turn your fridge to its lowest temperature.
- Preserve cell phone battery life.
- Stay away from low-hanging or downed power lines.
- Bring items from outside balconies and patios indoors.
- Pick up litter and debris to keep catch basins clear.
- Secure your garbage can.
- Put important documents in a weather proof container.
- Stay inside until officials say otherwise.
- Check for updates on university social media pages, email, and emergency.tulane.edu.
- Call 911 in an emergency. Call 311 for information or to report non-emergency service requests like downed trees.
- Storms can be scary for children. Talk to your family about what’s happening, and keep games and toys on hand to entertain.
