The School of Social Work was established in 1914 as the first training program for social workers in the Deep South. Building on that deep history, the school aims to educate future social workers in a practice that is community centered, evidence-based and focused on empowerment. What better place to learn about human resiliency, diversity, community-based knowledge and innovative social practice than in New Orleans? But an education in social work at Tulane extends beyond the city limits. Our faculty conduct study abroad electives in Cuba, Honduras, India and South Africa. These cross-cultural experiences give students a deeper understanding of issues facing people around the world and allow them to put what they’ve learned in the classroom into practice to make a real difference in people’s lives.
