LCMC Health and Tulane University are partnering to serve patients in the greater New Orleans area and beyond.

LCMC Health and Tulane University are mission-based non-profit organizations that call Southeast Louisiana home. The organizations have a long-standing relationship and shared commitment to train the next generation of healthcare providers and care for our community. This partnership will bring together an award-winning, community-based healthcare system and a nationally recognized, leading research university, resulting in the collaboration our state and region needs to make Louisiana a destination for healthcare.

Why are Tulane University and LCMC Health partnering, and when will it go into effect?

LCMC Health and Tulane University have a vision to partner to bring the best of community healthcare and academic medicine to all those we serve. With this partnership, Tulane Medical Center, Lakeview Regional Medical Center, and Tulane Lakeside Hospital will join the LCMC Health family. Together, we will not only increase access to comprehensive and specialty care across our region, but also advance groundbreaking research, innovative technology, and lifesaving treatments that ensure all our patients and communities can receive the highest quality of care, right here in greater New Orleans.  

Filing the intent to transition into this structure with the Louisiana Department of Justice is the first step in the process. A review by the Louisiana Department of Justice and a public comment period will take place during the next 90 days. LCMC Health and Tulane University anticipate the agreement will be finalized late this year or early next year, pending regulatory and governance approvals with transition planning and activities to follow. This transition will take time and be a collaborative process. All facility operations will continue as normal as we plan the transition over the next 12-24 months after the approval of the partnership.

How will this partnership affect patients and access to care?

Both Tulane University and LCMC Health are committed to ensuring a seamless transition for our patients, all of whom will continue to receive the high-quality care they need and deserve. Patients who currently receive care at Tulane Medical Center will be able to access LCMC Health’s University Medical Center, East Jefferson General Hospital, or other hospitals in the LCMC Health system, where they will be provided with the same high-quality care they expect and deserve.

How will this partnership between Tulane University and LCMC Health affect the existing hospitals?

This partnership will bring new opportunities to invest in our community, enhance patient care and collaborate for medical research grants and innovations. As part of this transition, the majority of services provided at Tulane Medical Center will shift to East Jefferson General Hospital and University Medical Center New Orleans, creating more opportunities for comprehensive, integrated care at facilities that can support new growth and an even better patient experience. Additionally, we will expand clinical services and academic expertise at University Medical Center New Orleans, ensuring our patients and communities downtown have continued access to quality care close to home.

What will happen to Tulane University’s three hospitals? Will this transaction affect academic opportunities for students and faculty?

Tulane Medical Center, Lakeview Regional Medical Center, and Tulane Lakeside Hospital will join the LCMC Health family, bringing new opportunities to invest in our community, enhance patient care, and collaborate for cutting-edge medical research grants and innovations.

The majority of services provided at Tulane Medical Center will shift to East Jefferson General Hospital and University Medical Center New Orleans, creating more opportunities for comprehensive, integrated care at facilities that can support new growth and an even better patient experience. We will create an expanded hub for specialty care, innovation, and academic medicine at East Jefferson General Hospital.

This transition of Tulane Medical Center will take time and be a collaborative process; facility operations will continue as normal as we plan the transition over the next 12-24 months after the approval of the partnership.

The building that currently houses Tulane Medical Center will become home to a new nursing program, clinical research programs, and educational space for students – infusing new activity and economic opportunity into the downtown New Orleans area. Tulane University is committed to investing approximately $600 million into downtown New Orleans, including a revitalization of the Charity Hospital building and repurposing of the Tulane Medical Center building to create a thriving center of cutting-edge research and innovation.

This partnership will create more opportunities for residents to rotate at facilities across the region. These training experiences will not only enhance the care provided to patients today, but strengthen the pipeline of physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who will choose to make New Orleans the place they live and practice for decades to come.

There will be no immediate changes in operations at Tulane Lakeside Hospital and Lakeview Regional Medical Center.

What does this partnership mean for providers and employees at Tulane Medical Center, Lakeview Regional Medical Center and Tulane Lakeside Hospital?

Both LCMC Health and Tulane University value our providers and employees and are committed to retaining our staff across both organizations. All employees at the three hospitals – Tulane Medical Center, Tulane Lakeside Hospital, and Lakeview Regional Medical Center, will continue to have jobs under this exciting partnership. Additionally, this partnership will bring LCMC Health and Tulane University employees new and expanded opportunities for growth and advancement.

We will work collaboratively to ensure that all those potentially impacted by the proposed changes have opportunities to continue their professional growth within the LCMC Health family. We anticipate this partnership will result in additional job growth and new opportunities as we aim to attract and recruit top talent to the greater New Orleans region.

Will this bring new investment opportunities to the community?

Central to this partnership is a commitment from both LCMC Health and Tulane University to increase investment in our region and our people. Combining clinical services at East Jefferson General Hospital and expanding clinical services and academic expertise at University Medical Center New Orleans will enhance delivery of care across both Orleans and Jefferson Parishes.

Notably, LCMC Health has committed to an initial capital investment of $220 million in the operations of East Jefferson General Hospital to build a premier academic medical center, as well as in the operations of Tulane Lakeside Hospital and Lakeview Regional Medical Center. These funds will directly enhance the hospitals and services provided to patients and continue to attract the best and brightest providers and keep them here.

Tulane University is committed to investing approximately $600 million into downtown New Orleans, including new construction and enhancements. This represents a one-time impact of $1 billion on the Louisiana state economy. This investment includes a revitalization of the Charity Hospital building and repurposing of the Tulane Medical Center building. The downtown campus will become a thriving center of cutting-edge research and innovation featuring a new nursing program, clinical research programs, educational space for students, graduate programs in public health, social work, professional advancement, and medicine, along with a new space dedicated to research. Through these initiatives, Tulane University will add approximately 2,300 jobs across New Orleans and Louisiana.
