The 7th Annual Sylvia R. Frey Lecture: Be About Beauty featuring Kalamu ya Salaam
Wednesday, September 26
7:00pm-9:00pm
Freeman Auditorium, Woldenberg Art Center
Tulane University Uptown Campus
New Orleans Center for the Gulf South welcomes activist, educator, filmmaker, writer, editor and poet Kalamu ya Salaam to present the 7th annual Sylvia R. Frey lecture. He is a music producer and an award-winning writer and music critic. Ya Salaam will feature his latest work Be About Beauty (University of New Orleans Press 2018), a collection of essays that present observations and analysis of New Orleans culture and economics, performance and plastic arts, education, and personal and social autobiography.
Statement from the Speaker:
In the final analysis, writing is a conversation, and even if we can not tell the pilgrim which way to go, certainly we should tell the pilgrim from whence we have come, what brought us here and what is the nature of the "here" where we now find ourselves. Moreover, the point is not simply the content. The point is also the conversation. Not just what we are saying, but also with whom we are speaking, to whom we are writing.
Kalamu ya Salaam (born Vallery Ferdinand, III on 24 March 1947 in New Orleans) is the author of numerous books and pamphlets. His latest publications are The Magic of JuJu: An Appreciation of the Black Arts Movement (Third World Press - 2016), New Orleans Griot--The Tom Dent Reader (University of New Orleans Press - 2017, Be About Beauty - selected essays (University of New Orleans Press - 2018), and he is the editor of Go to Jail--Confronting a System of Injustice (University of California Press-Santa Barbara - 2018). His recordings include the CD My Story, My Song and his films include Baby Love. He can be reached at kalamu@mac.com.
