Civil Disturbance/Protest

Tulane University supports the rights of persons to self-expression, dissent, and to demonstrate provided that demonstrations are lawful, do not disrupt normal university activities, or do not infringe upon the rights of others. Most demonstrations are peaceful. People who are not involved in protests should attempt to carry on business as usual if safe to do so.It is the illegal acts, which may arise during these activities that concern the university.
 

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

  1. If activities threaten or result in damage to university buildings or grounds, or threaten the safety of others, call the Tulane Police emergency line.  Tulane Police Emergency Numbers are:
  • Tulane National Primate Center Police emergency:  985-871-6411
  • Tulane Downtown Campus Police emergency: 504-988-5555
  • Tulane Uptown Campus Police emergency: 504-865-5200, or pick-up the nearest emergency blue-light phone.
  • Other Campuses: Call 911
  1. Give the TUPD Dispatcher your name.
  2. Give the TUPD Dispatcher your exact location and any information you have regarding the disturbance.
  3. Remain calm.
  4. Avoid obstructing or provoking the protestors.
  5. Alert all persons in the area of the situation.
  6. If possible, lock doors and windows, and close blinds to prevent flying glass.
  7. If it is safe to remain at your location, do so until TUPD officers arrive. 
  8. If it is not safe to remain at your location, evacuate to another part of the building that is safer or completely exit the building if safe to do so.  Call the Tulane Police emergency line to inform them that you have evacuated or moved locations.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN

 
  1. TUPD will IMMEDIATELY dispatch officers to gain control of the situation.
  2. TUPD Dispatch will activate the New Orleans Police Department, Tulane EMS and NO EMS, as necessary.
  3. Responding officers will instruct building occupants in any required actions.
  4. The threatened building(s) will be evacuated if necessary by TUPD.
  5. The Tulane emergency alert system will be activated to inform the community to avoid the area of the protest.
  6. An “all clear” message will be issued once the situation has returned to normal.
