Dr Andrew Schally Nobel Prize

Gold Standard

Endocrinologist Dr. Andrew Schally, a researcher at Tulane and the New Orleans VA Medical Center from 1962-2005, donated his Nobel Prize to Tulane with the hope of inspiring the next generation of researchers. He won the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and his work, conducted at Tulane, led to discoveries in prostate cancer treatment, contraception, diabetes and depression. The medal will be displayed in the School of Medicine for faculty, staff and students to serve as a reminder of how discovery can lead to global impact.

Teaching Excellence

Four faculty members were honored at Commencement with university- wide teaching awards, recognizing their dedication to students and how their teaching excellence has enriched the Tulane community. Ricardo Cortez, PhD, the Pendergraft William Larkin Duren Professor in the Department of Mathematics, and Adeline Masquelier, PhD, professor in the Department of Anthropology, received the 2024 Tulane President’s Awards for Excellence in Professional and Graduate Teaching. Carrie Wyland, PhD, senior professor of practice in the Department of Psychology, received the Suzanne and Stephen Weiss Presidential Fellowship for Undergraduate Education. The Oliver Fund Award for Excellence in Faculty Mentoring was awarded to Katherine Theall, PhD, holder of the Cecile Usdin Professorship in Women’s Health in the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
