Not Your Average Sex Talk (NYAST) is a peer-to-peer health advocacy network that uses a social justice framework to discuss sex and intimacy in ways that are often neglected in traditional sex education settings. Understanding that there is no universal, comprehensive sex ed. curriculum, NYAST aims to: disperse specific and medically-accurate sexual health information, facilitate discussions beyond heteronormative sexual intercourse, and address how homo/bi/transphobia, ableism, and racism intertwine with attraction and intimacy. NYAST was founded by Emmett Patterson and Lex Loro in 2014 with the goal of creating dialogue and resources that are sex-positive, intersectional, and catered towards marginalized people. Since co-founding NYAST they have presented their peer-to-peer sexual education curriculum on college campuses and at national and local conferences and symposiums. Lex and Emmett’s community-driven approach to youth sexual education aims to empower a new generation of leaders to take control of their health and the health of their communities.
