Far from home, many first-year students are unsure about how to navigate the challenges of New Orleans. With the Town Mom program organized by the Newcomb Alumnae Association, they don’t have to rely on the whims of an Internet search or advice from other students.

Thanks to the hard work of volunteer and 2001 graduate Meredith Feike Crane, the association’s vice president for New Orleans, the Town Moms program connected more than 80 pairs of incoming Tulane University women with local Newcomb alumnae. Incoming women students are matched with alumnae over the summer, then gather for a celebratory jazz brunch one weekend.

Andrea Price, a 1998 graduate, has been a Town Mom since 2008, and finds it a unique way to stay connected to the university community.

“I enjoy meeting the people that are just starting out, and hopefully help them have a good experience while they are here. I get a lot out of it too — I don't typically hang out with college freshmen, and they are delightful.”

This year, Price was connected with two new students, each with their own reasons for building a relationship with a local alumna. Holly Hunt, from Arlington Heights, Ill., says that she was encouraged to participate because her own mother was “nervous about me being so far away.”

Olivia Manz, of Marathon, Fla., sought out the opportunity to get more involved with her new community.

“I wanted to get connected in every way I could. I hope to get a relationship with someone connected to New Orleans that will help to make the city more my home.”
