The Insider: Be seen. Be ‘That Guy’

Green Wave athletics is calling all fans to step out of the shadows and “Rise Up” to support our teams. Here is an opportunity for one lucky student to become the face of Tulane through a fun competition that’s sure to make someone the most popular guy or girl on campus!


The competition, known as “That Guy,”  kicked off this semester in tandem with the new “Rise Up” theme promoted by the athletics marketing department. The winner of the competition will epitomize the ultimate Green Wave fan and get lots of face time through on- and off-campus appearances, video blog posts and a new Tulane wardrobe.

Jason Potuto, assistant athletic director for marketing and event sales, says this is the first time that athletics has conducted tryouts for the ultimate fan.

“We want to show everyone that it’s okay to be a Tulane fan because we’ve noticed over the years that our pride is there, but sometimes it’s suppressed,” says Potuto. “That can happen when the win-loss ratio is not where we’d like it to be.”

To address the suppressed spirit, Potuto turned to Innovador, the Dallas-based advertising agency that came up with the idea to create a role model for fans — That Guy.

“This is a great opportunity for the right person,” says Potuto, who assures applicants that it will not be as time consuming as it sounds. “It resembles an internship, but it will be a lot more fun. The person we’re looking for is outgoing and isn’t easily embarrassed.”

If you think you’ve got what it takes to be “That Guy” or “That Girl,” 60-second video applications are being accepted through Friday (Sept. 22) and interviews will be conducted Sept. 26–27.  Online voting begins Sept. 28 and closes on Oct. 5. The winner will be revealed at the Syracuse University vs. Tulane football game on Oct. 8.
