When New Orleans CityBusiness looked around the community to choose 50 outstanding leaders for its annual Women of the Year list, the publication’s editors turned to Tulane and named professor and administrator Sally J. Kenney to the list, along with three others affiliated with the university.

Kenney, professor of political science and executive director of the Newcomb College Institute, also is the author of the newly released book Gender and Justice: Why Women in the Judiciary Really Matter.

Joining Tulane in 2010, Kenney has led the institute in its mission to educate undergraduate women for leadership. She co-teaches the course Law and Politics of Domestic Violence.

Kenney said, “I have been so grateful to begin to contribute to my new community, building on the groundwork of the Law School’s Domestic Violence Clinic and the Center for Public Service. I really look forward to working more closely with Louisiana’s women judges (and to elect more), especially on issues incarcerated women face,” she said.

Joining Kenney on the CityBusiness list of honorees are:

Barbara Beckman, professor of pharmacology and associate dean of admissions in the Tulane School of Medicine, who recently donated to create a professorship at Tulane to encourage diversity and propel the careers of women scientists.

Johanna Gilligan, Tulane alumna, an Urban Innovator fellow at the university and co-director of the Grow Dat Youth Farm, an urban farm affiliated with Tulane that expands fresh produce availability and increases opportunities for high school students.

Missie McGuire, assistant vice president for campus recreation and student centers, who is co-founder of Girls First, a nonprofit organization that has provided sport and movement opportunities to underserved girls in the New Orleans area, including a weeklong residential sports camp on the Tulane campus.

CityBusiness will hold a luncheon on Nov. 16 to announce the overall Woman of the Year.
