It’s Friday, Aug. 24. Residence halls are prepped. Textbooks, class supplies and the latest T-shirts are waiting at the Tulane Bookstore. Volunteers and staff members are trained and ready to give directions and answer questions from new students and their parents. The uptown campus is ready to open its doors to the fall semester.

It still feels like summer in the Crescent City, but this is what fall looks like at Tulane. The bulk of first-year students moves into residence halls early tomorrow (Aug. 25), joining student-athletes, Tulane Marching Band members and others who arrived early.

When the weekend is done, about 3,800 students will be settled in their rooms, ready for the start of classes on Monday (Aug. 27).

A line of trucks is stationed along Newcomb Boulevard, filled with packages sent from home by students. Tomorrow parents manning handcarts will gather boxes and ferry them to waiting residence hall rooms.

Helping out will be move-in volunteers from 26 student organizations — sororities, fraternities, Tulane Hillel, the Catholic Center, community service groups and the Tulane cheerleaders.

To say it’s the busiest time of year is quite an understatement for Penny Wyatt, director of orientations and student transitions, and her student staff. In all, more than 200 campus partners contribute to making the day a success, Wyatt says.
