The Tulane University Shuttles and Transportation Office is taking a proactive approach to student safety by expanding its evening transportation options to include a new Gold Zone, with late-night shuttle service that transports students to and from the uptown campus.

The Gold Zone encompasses a large area bordered by the Jefferson Parish line, Louisiana Avenue, Earhart Boulevard and the Mississippi River. Since July 1, it operates seven days a week, excluding university holidays, from 8 p.m. until 3 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday and from 8 p.m. until 3:30 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.

Brian Lowe, director of shuttles and transportation, says that students can call 504-314-7233 during Gold Zone operating hours to be taken from the uptown campus to an off-campus residence, from an off-campus residence to the uptown campus or from one off-campus residence to another within the Gold Zone’s boundaries.

A Gold Zone mobile app for students to request a ride is in the works.
“We realize that students are traveling to these areas and we want them to have university-provided transportation even when they don’t live on campus,” says Lowe.

In addition to the Gold Zone, students can utilize the taxicab program, the Uptown Loop and the Car Share Program to get to destinations outside of shuttle service.

The cab staging area is located next to PJ’s coffee shop on Willow Street where the Nawlins and Carriage cab companies are available for prearranged and walk-up fares.

The Uptown Loop is a fixed shuttle line that runs every 30 minutes at stops along Carrollton Avenue, Freret, Maple, Willow and Oak streets. Lowe says this line provides access to more than 45 local eateries and bars from 6 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday beginning Aug. 28.

Students who sign up for the Car Share Program pay just $10 an hour to rent one of four available cars. Gas and insurance are included in that rate.
