National Public Radio aired a story recently, “Mind-Numbing TV Shows Are a Hit in Norway,” that still has me chuckling. “The Wall Street Journal reports that one idea being considered is a live show with knitting experts,” NPR business news announced.

The reason this tickles me is because I know a group of women affiliated with Tulane University who probably would love a live knitting show.

It’s a loosely knit but warm group called April’s Crafty Ladies. Founded many years ago as an offshoot of the Tulane University Women’s Association, the group convenes monthly to socialize while knitting and crocheting various projects, and get tips from others about how to navigate sometimes prickly issues encountered while working with needles.

The group took on the name April’s Crafty Ladies in memory of the group’s founder, April Brayfield, an associate professor of sociology, after she died in December 2011.

One recent project undertaken by several of the group’s members was pedicure socks, using a pattern provided by Marjorie Weiner, one of the group’s experienced knitters.
Undaunted by the teeny, size 2 knitting needles, Eileen Ryan of the Tulane Law School was the first to complete a sock. Ryan took a respite before starting on her second pedicure sock, knitting a satchel out of one-inch strips of fabric on extra-huge knitting needles.

In the fall months, the Crafty Ladies will produce dozens of hats and scarves that will be donated to a local shelter for women and children who have suffered domestic violence.

Women of all skill levels and levels of enthusiasm for handcrafts are welcome to join the next meetings on July 23, Aug. 20, Sept. 24, Oct. 22 and Nov. 26, from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. in Newcomb Hall. Tulane women who would like to receive notices of upcoming meetings can email Jeanny Keck
