Non-FMLA Medical Leave

Staff members who do not meet the eligibility requirements of family and medical leave may request Non-FMLA medical leave. This leave is only available for the staff member to tend to his or her own serious medical condition.

You must submit medical certification in support of your leave.  If your leave is approved, you may use sick or vacation hours.  Once paid leave is exhausted, the remainder of the leave is unpaid.  

While on non-FMLA medical leave, you may continue to be covered by Tulane’s group health plans on the same terms that are applicable to active employees.  You will be required to continue to pay your share of all premiums due.

Any leave or combination of leaves may not exceed 6 months in any rolling 12-month period unless otherwise required by law.

While out on leave, if you are medically disabled an unable to return to work, you may apply for Long Term Disability benefits.  When an employee is approved for Long Term Disability benefits, the employee will be eligible for continuation of medical, dental, and vision benefits, in accordance with the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), and employment ends.
