Postdoctoral scholars who are considered employees and whose salaries are derived from sponsored projects are subject to the University’s policies and procedures for determining the level of compensation. Factors used to determine postdoctoral salaries might include: the number of years beyond the terminal degree, special background and experience needed for a particular sponsored project, and the customary postdoctoral salaries paid by discipline on a national level and/or guidelines recommended by federal agencies.
Recipients of NIH National Research Service Awards (NRSA) at the post-doctoral level are considered to be trainees/fellows, not employees of the university, and are therefore not subject to Tulane’s compensation policies. The stipend levels for NRSA postdoctoral fellows are regulated by NIH. Other federal agencies with postdoctoral fellowship programs may have regulations similar to those of NIH.
