What is a biometric screening?
A biometric screening is a quick health examination that determines your overall health and risk levels of certain medical conditions. The types of test that will be performed at the biometric screenings are: Cholesterol, Glucose, Blood Pressure, Body Composition and Body Mass Index. In order to perform the Cholesterol and Glucose testing a quick finger stick will be performed.  

Why do you want me to complete a biometric screening and online health assessment?
First, we want you to have the information you need to get and stay healthy, so you can enjoy your life to the fullest.  In addition, completing the health assessment is a proven way to save on future health expenses.  When you take advantage of preventative care services and health improvement programs, you help reduce your risk for more serious illness and the expense they bring.

How do I get a biometric screening?
There are two ways you can get your biometric screening. You can attend one of the events on campus. For your convenience, Workforce Management has partnered with CIGNA to bring biometric screening events to you. Please see the Biometrics Screening Schedule page for the complete list of times and locations of the events.

How much will I have to pay for the Biometric Screening?
If you attend one of the biometric screening events on campus, there will be no charge. Also, your health plan at Tulane pays 100% of all costs associated with well care visits.

Do I have to register for the biometric screening events or can I just walk in?
Yes, because we are expecting high participation, we are asking that you register in advance for a biometric screening event. To register online now, click here or dial 1-800-694-4982 to register for a biometric screening event by telephone. 

How long should I expect to be out of the office for the biometric screening?
We recommend that you plan for 30 minutes. You will have a 10-15 minute wait time while your results are being processed.  

Who will know my results of the biometric screening?
Your results are between you and CIGNA. The University takes the privacy of your health information very seriously. The results of the biometric screenings are completely confidential and are not shared with the University.

Will completing the biometric screening and health assessment increase my health insurance rate or cause my insurance to be cancelled?
No.  Completing the biometric screening and health assessment will not increase your insurance rate or cause your insurance to be cancelled because CIGNA is only permitted to use individual data for the purpose of confirming an individual’s eligibility and for administrating health improvement programs available to that individual and not for the purpose of developing individual insurance rates.  These requirements are explained in CIGNA’s Privacy Statement.

How will CIGNA load, transmit and protect my private health information? 
Due to protection and privacy rights of health information, CIGNA will provide vendors to perform these services throughout the Tulane community. Tulane will not have access to your private health information at any point.

Will completing the biometric screening and the health assessment affect my ability to get health insurance in the future?
No.  Completing the biometric screening and the health assessment will not affect your ability to get health insurance in the future.  That’s because CIGNA is only permitted to use individual health data for the purpose of confirming an individual’s eligibility and for administrating health improvement programs available to that individual and not for the purpose of developing individual insurance rates.  In addition, CIGNA does not share the results with other carriers.  These requirements are explained in CIGNA’s Privacy Statement.

Will completing the biometric screening and health assessment cause a claim to be denied because of a pre-existing condition?
No, the information in your health assessment and biometric screening  is not used to determine whether a claim will be paid or denied.

What is an Online Health Assessment?
The Online Health Assessment is an easy-to-use questionnaire about your health and well-being, which takes about 15 to 30 minutes to complete. The questionnaire asks you about overall health; it also requests basic biometric information such as weight, blood pressure and cholesterol level.

Where do I take the Online Health Assessment?
Beginning on September 26, 2011 you may visit the Workforce Management website to complete the Online Health Assessment.

Why is completing the Online Health Assessment important?
The Online Health Assessment analyzes your answers and produces a personal health report with details about your most important health issues. The report will include suggestions for health screenings and information about wellness and other health programs that may help you improve your health. You can also print a summary of the report to take to your next doctor's visit. Use it to ask your doctor questions and to learn more about your health.

Why does the health assessment ask personal, non-health questions, such as my ethnicity and marital status?
Personal factors like ethnicity and marital status play a part in your total health picture and that information helps in assessing and predicting your future health risk.  In addition, some ethnic groups are more at risk for certain health conditions, so it’s important to include that information.

Where does my Online Health Assessment information go after I complete it?
Health assessment information is sent to CIGNA through a secure transmission and once they receive it, they maintain and secure the information as required by state and federal law. CIGNA only uses and discloses your Online Health Assessment information as described on the CIGNA Privacy Statement and for no other purposes. If CIGNA wanted to use or disclose the information in any other manner they would request your written authorization to do so.

If I miss the opportunity to qualify for the discounted premium rate this fall, will I have a second chance to qualify?
No. In order to qualify for the discounted premium, you must complete the Health Assessment and Biometric Screening and send CIGNA the results by November 23, 2011; no additional time will be allowed. The deadline for CIGNA to receive your information is November 23, 2011 at 11:59pm.  

If I participated in the biometric screenings events last year, can I use those numbers for the discounted premium?
Yes, you can use your biometric screening numbers if you had them checked within the last year. It does not matter if they come from your personal physician, a TUWellness event or upcoming on-campus screening events to be conducted soon.
