Web, Learning and the Zen of Teaching: An Investigation into the Myths of Teaching, Learning and Technology

Keynote speaker:

Antonio Vantaggiato

This talk focuses on the mythology around education and the role of technology. Language use shows how deeply-rooted beliefs influence our pedagogy: Though research has clearly shown that constructivism is a winning pedagogic strategy, we keep talking of “delivering” classes and lectures, and students “watching” online classes, while they “attend” face-to-face sessions. Unsurprisingly, rarely do we see the scientific method itself.

Vantaggiato will discuss the role of technology in the teaching practice and beyond, and will provide examples of such beliefs and how they restrain the revolution of education which is being triggered by the new Web & media technologies. He will also describe the Zen of Teaching project and the interviews he has been conducting with leading people on these very subjects, from Clay Shirky to Mike Wesch and Gardner Campbell.
He will also will explore some of the new practices that come out of emerging ideas: The Syndication Bus, Storytelling, Connectivism, etc. Yes, he will also talk a bit about MOOCs!

Antonio Vantaggiato is a Professor of Computer Science and the Director of STEMmED at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he also founded the distance learning institute.  As part of this work, he has led an initiative to build an infrastructure for learning object development for the HETS consortium (www.hets.org), within a group of seven institutions. He also founded the Puerto Rican Congress on Web e-ducation, and organized and held four editions (2002-2005).

Northwestern University: Digital Initiatives

Marianna Kepka and Joel Shapiro

This interactive session will provide background on the development of massive open online courses (MOOCs) against a backdrop of existing institutional online learning strategies and share best practices and lessons learned in the early stages of MOOC production at Northwestern University. Session participants will be encouraged to contextualize the recent hype around MOOCs to their institution and discipline and think about potential institutional and course goals for the MOOC. They will learn about the various tools,  teaching strategies, and media available in the MOOC context and how best to leverage these depending on the course topic, audience and learning objectives. Finally, operational topics based on Northwestern’s experience will be covered such as: how much time it takes to develop and launch a MOOC, how institutions can support MOOC production, and how MOOCs can enhance the traditional on-ground learning experience.

Marianna Kepka, MS
Marianna Kepka is Assistant Provost for Academic Administration and Director of Change Management at Northwestern University. She directs initiatives that cross units/schools and conducts research and analyses on behalf of the Provost and Associate Provosts to inform University priorities and policies. Currently she is co-leading an effort to support new online learning initiatives, including the University's engagement in Semester Online and production of MOOCs through Coursera. Marianna graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the College of William and Mary in Virginia and holds a MS in Higher Education Administration and Policy from Northwestern University.


Joel Shapiro, JD, PhD
Joel Shapiro is Associate Dean of Academic Programs at Northwestern University School of Continuing Studies, overseeing graduate, undergraduate, summer session, non-credit, and distance learning programs.  He has a background in law, policy, and education analytics and research, having led multiple large-scale U.S. Department of Education-sponsored evaluations of online K12 initiatives meant to enhance academic achievement of underserved populations.  He teaches on-ground and online graduate courses in quantitative public policy analysis at Northwestern SCS.  Joel holds a BS in physics from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, a JD from Northwestern University School of Law and a PhD in policy analysis from the Pardee RAND Graduate School, part of the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, CA.
