IPTV IS AVAILABLE TO UPTOWN, ON-CAMPUS RESIDENTS, ONLY

IPTV, or Internet Protocol Television, is the delivery of television over the Internet instead of via traditional TV formats. Tulane Technology Services has partnered with Cox Campus Connect to bring IPTV to Tulane residence halls and throughout the Tulane campus.

IPTV delivers a cable television-like lineup to the users' desktop (Mac and Windows) and mobile devices (iOS, Andriod & Kindle).  Eventually, your gaming devices (Playstation, X-Box , etc.) will be IPTV capable, too. The Tulane IPTV service is intended for on-campus residents and is only available over the Tulane network - you won't be able to connect from off-campus.

At this time, IPTV does not offer the full lineup of cable TV and local broadcast channels, but that is changing, with services being added throughout the year. Currently, IPTV is being offered in conjunction with traditional cable TV service to the residence halls. At some future date, Tulane anticipates dropping all CATV (wired) service in favor of IPTV.

 

Getting Started

Desktop or laptop: Download and install the IPTV app to get started.  Remember, the app won't work unless you are Tulane uptown campus resident.

If you already have an earlier version of the Tulane/Cox IPTV desktop app loaded on your computer, you must uninstall before installing a new version.

NOTE: if the Cox TV Connect application asks you to specify a "Service" select "Tulane" from the list, not "Residential"

Who gets to watch IPTV?
IPTV is available to all students living in the residence halls on the Tulane uptown campus.

What equipment do I need to watch IPTV on my desktop?
 The IPTV desktop app is available for Mac and PC. The application will operate under Mac OS X 1.6 and higher, and current versions of Windows (Vista, Win7, Win8).  Best results when using the latest hardware; the minimum and recommended requirements are:

  • PC minimum specs

    • Win 8, Windows 7 (32 or 64 bit), Vista, XP SP3
    • Intel based 2.6 GHz or Dual Core 1.46 GHz, and SSE2
    • 1 GB system RAM
    • DirectX 9 compatible video card with 512MB DDR2 RAM, 350 MHz GPU clock rate and 0.7 pixel-per-second fillrate
    • DirectX compatible sound card
  • PC recommended specs

    • Intel based processor Dual Core or Core2 Duo with 2.1 GHz per CPU
    •  2 GB system RAM
  • Mac minimum specs

    • OS X 10.6 and above
    • Intel based 2.26 GHz Core 2 Dou processor
    • 2 GB DDR2 system RAM
    • Video card with at least 256 MB RAM
  •  Mac recommended specs

    • OS X 10.6 and above
    • Intel based Core i3 processor
    • 4 GB DDR2 system RAM
    • Video card with at least 512 MB RAM

Can I watch IPTV with a smartphone or tablet?
Yes you can!  There are IPTV apps for iOS devices (iPhone, iPad and iTouch), Android devices, and Kindle Fires. Visit the Apple iTunes App store, Google Play, or Amazon.com and search for "Cox TV Connect."

WIll I be able to watch the local broadcast channels with IPTV?
The local broadcast channels have not been included in this stage of the IPTV pilot.  These channels will be added to the channel lineup at a later date.

Why isn't my favorite cable TV channel on the IPTV lineup?
IPTV is new technology and the television networks are still deciding how they want to license their content. Tulane's IPTV partner, Cox Communications, is actively negotiating with the various network providers to bring you the programming you most want to see.  Expect more additions to the channel lineup as new deals are struck.

What are my IPTV username and password?
When you launch the IPTV app you will be asked to enter your username and password - use your Tulane email address and password.

Can I watch IPTV on my television?
If you can connect a computer to your TV, then yes you can.  Future IPTV developments include ser tip boxes, and  IPTV is fully adopted at Tulane, then expect to see future developments such as IPTV app's for game consoles (XBox, Playstation) and additional mobile devices.

I don't live on campus - can I get IPTV, too?
Sorry, but as IPTV is funded by housing fees, the service is limited to those who live in the on-campus residence halls.

I live in a Tulane residence hall and should have access to IPTV but the application says I do not - why?
To confirm whether you are included in the IPTV group, send your name, Tulane username, and the name of the residence hall you live in to IPTV@tulane.edu

What is IPTV going to cost me?
There will be no extra charge for IPTV.  Just like the existing campus cable TV system, the cost to operate IPTV is built in to your residence hall contract.

Why does it take so long to change channels?
As with all digital television systems, there is a lag between the time you choose a channel and when the image is displayed as the new channel data is requested from the server and then buffered for playback. Lag time is increased on a slow network connection.

Will IPTV replace the TUCAN cable TV network currently in all the residence halls?
If the IPTV pilot proves to be successful, then yes - it will eventually replace the campus traditional cable TV network.

IPTV Troubleshooting Guide

IPTV is simple to use.  Once you've downloaded and installed the app, simply launch and choose a program from the channel guide.  Use the channel guide arrows to move through the channels.  Use the control bar to resize, fill the screen, mute, or raise and lower audio.

The image freezes, the audio stutters, or the image resolution is poor
The IPTV system will run over the wireless network but the best results often come from a wired connection.  If you are in an area with poor or congested wireless connectivity, attach your computer to the network with an Ethernet cable and try again.

The audio still stutters and the application quits without warning sometimes
The IPTV app is very processor intensive and can be affected by other apps you are running simultaneously. Shut down some of your other apps and relaunch IPTV.


The IPTV app won't launch and gives me an error that says I'm not on the Tulane network

  • Check to make sure that you are connected to the Tulane network, with a physical Ethernet cable or over the wireless network.
  • Ensure that you are using the latest version of the Cox TV Connect application for your desktop, or mobile device. A link to the most recent application for Mac and for Windows can be found on this page. You must first UNINSTALL the IPTV app before installing a new version.

The IPTV app says that I have entered an invalid User ID or Password. Please try again

  • check to make sure you are using your correct Tulane User ID and Password
  • Make sure that under the "Service" pull down menu, you have selected "Tulane" and NOT "Residential"
  • If the problem persists, report to iptv@tulane.edu

I just loaded a new version of the IPTV app and now it doesn't work
You must first UNINSTALL the IPTV app before installing a new version
