Orientation: Navigation and Transition Resources for Parents, too!

At Tulane University, we consider parents and families of our students as partners with us in inspiring students’ success.  We know that it can be challenging for parents and families to navigate university systems to assist and coach their college student from afar, so we offer help to parents within our orientation programs for new students.

Typically, over 80% of the incoming class attends New Student Orientation, two-day, overnight sessions offered late May through June each year. Though not required for parents, we invite you to attend our unique complement of presentations and activities designed specifically for parents which run concurrently with those for students. If you attend, you will receive abundant information to help you support your student through this transition to life at college, in particular at Tulane University. Use these links for complete details on:

On those pages you’ll find the link your student will use to reserve a space and add you as a guest.

If you cannot attend New Student Orientation with your student, don’t worry!  Over half of our student participants attend without parents. Each student is assigned to a group of 20 new classmates led by our experienced, trained Orientation Team Leaders.  New students will always have an upperclass student available to answer questions and guide them through the experience. Once the program starts at 1:30 pm on the first day, all meals, snacks, materials and supervised activities are included in the program fee. If you’d like to pre-arrange transportation to and from the airport for your student, use the link on our Lodging and Travel Resources page. We will send your student back home with our Tulane Parent Guide full of helpful campus resource information.  Don’t miss the helpful Dates and Deadlines list – parallel to the one in your student’s guide!

We strongly encourage all students to attend, but if your student cannot attend New Student Orientation, we’ll mail copies of both the New Student Orientation guide and Tulane Parent Guide to your home address around the second week of July. The student’s guide will have a special insert on steps to take to get caught up and well-prepared for the move to campus in August, including participating in a webinar offered in July. Please make sure your student reads the “Navigator” e-newsletters sent on the 1st and 15th June – August to stay on track.  The “Navigators” contain notice of upcoming deadlines, descriptions of Fall Welcome programs and advice on preparing for the move to campus.

When all new students move to campus in August, we know we’ll see most of you! We call this part of new students’ orientation and transition program Fall Welcome and it all begins with Move-In Day. Plan to arrive on Friday, August 22, 2014 to move-in, do errands, and help your student get settled before their required first floor meeting at 8 pm. If you can, stay through Saturday evening, August 23, so you can see all the pomp and circumstance of the President’s Convocation, visit the Deans’ Open Houses and mingle with faculty, staff and other parents. More required educational and transition programs start for the students at 1 pm on Sunday, August 24, so programs for parents end at that point.  Use these links on our Fall Welcome pages for details on:
