FAQs

General information for all applicants is supplied here. More detailed information about packing, arrival times, move-in, etc. will be provided to accepted participants and parents in June 2013.

Who participates?
All types of incoming, first time freshmen from 42 states and 2 countries have participated in recent years. Men, women or transgender; outgoing or shy; Jew, Muslim, Christian, or anything in between; joiner or loner; leader or follower; quiet or loud; local or far traveling students have participated in this program and loved every minute of it!

Do I get to pick exactly which track I participate in?
We will assign you to a track based on availability and fit, guided by answers in your application. All of the tracks will be engaging and fun. Experiencing the total program should be the goal, not just a specific track topic.

What is involved in the application?
The online application consists of short essay answers to a few questions pertinent to the program and thematic tracks. We will assign you to a track based on your answers, so please be thorough and honest. Please remember that you must be accepted to participate. Since there are not enough spots for everyone who is interested, the thoughtfulness of your answers is paramount.

What happens once a student is accepted?
If you are accepted you will also receive your track assignment via your Tulane e-mail address by June 18, 2013. You will need to accept the terms of participation at this time (online), and grant us permission to charge your Tulane Accounts Receivable bill for the $425 participation fee.

What happens if I don’t get accepted?
We may not be able accommodate everyone who applies since staffing, transportation and venue size dictate the number of students we can accommodate. If you are not selected, there will be a NOLA WAITLIST that you can opt to be placed on until August 1, 2013.

What if I do not get the track I want?
The NOLA Experience is about the larger program, not the thematic track. It is important for you to trust our judgment in assigning you to a track based on your application. Participants may opt to decline to participate, however, you will not be able to switch tracks once assigned. Many students who did not get their first choice in track still end up having a great time!

How much does NOLA cost?
The NOLA Experience participant fee is $425 per person, which includes the Monday, August 19 shuttle from the airport before the program begins; supplies, admission fees and transportation during the program activities; housing, and meals for 5 days & nights. The fee will be charged to your Tulane Accounts Receivable bill August 2013 if you are accepted and confirmed for the program in. Cost associated with travel to New Orleans is the responsibility of the participant. We recommend students bring spending money, including $20-25 incidental expenses like snacks between meals.

What if I change my mind?
Refunds will only be provided if you notify us prior to July 15, 2013 AND if we are able to find a student on the waiting list to take your place. No refunds will be given after July 15, 2013.

For Parents

All communication and confirmations will be sent to the student’s Tulane e-mail address so ask them to share the associated deadlines and information with you. Don’t worry! We know this early experience changes the timeline a bit so we have special instructions and solutions that will help you plan. We will hold two online webinars for the parents of accepted students in June and July to answer logistical and planning questions. If you have a particularly time-sensitive question, please email orientation@tulane.edu.
