Strategic Planning Accomplishments 2002 -- 2003
Initiative 1: People
- Completed report on Institutional Diversity and Equity; currently under review.
- Implemented revised benefit structure to include different levels of health coverage based on family size; established new dental benefits.
- Implemented phased and early retirement program for faculty on both campuses.
Initiative 2: Education and Research
- Average SAT score for incoming Fall 02 freshman class: 1327; 65% ranked in the top 10% of their high school class.
- Improved overall student quality and enrollment in graduate and professional programs.
- Expanded undergraduate honors program.
- Continued increases in research awards, expenditures, and indirect cost recovery.
- Initiated Presidential Symposia in the areas of Urban Studies (Fall 02) and Southern Culture (Spring 03).
- Awarded $1.4 million in Wall Fund grants to 4 projects focused on Research Infrastructure and Undergraduate Education.
- A.B. Freeman School of Business, Tulane School of Law ranked in the top 45 schools (US News & World Report).
Initiative 3: Community
- Purchased McMahon Office Building for use by the Health Sciences Center.
- Continued to strengthen and expand new and existing strategic partnerships and alliances to promote education and research, technology transfer, and economic development in Louisiana and the region, including :
- Gene Therapy Consortium and Online Louisiana (LSU System)
- Center for Bioenvironmental Research and School of Social Work collaborations (Nicholls State)
- Creole Studies Consortium (Northwestern State University)
- Continued statewide outreach efforts, "Tulane Day at the Legislature."
- Consolidated community service programs in one office and increased the number of students engaged, hours volunteered, and number of organizations served.
- Developed new JYA Independent Scholar Program (2003-04) for highly qualified students.
- Continued to build on strengths and connections to Latin America and Asia with new programs in South and Central America, China, Taiwan, et al.
- Increased the number of national Alumni Clubs from 35 (1998) to 54 (2002); established new international Alumni Clubs.
Initiative 4. Resources and Leadership
- Completed 1st year of implementation of Decentralized Management Center (DMC).
- Completed review of Athletics and reaffirmed commitment to Division I-A Athletics and established future expectations for department.
- Filled 5 key administration and academic vacancies:
- George Bernstein, Dean, Tulane College
- Anne Baños, Chief of Staff and Vice President
- Cynthia Cherrey, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
- Luann Dozier, Vice President for Development
- Deborah Grant, Vice President for University Communications
- Sharon Courtney, Assistant Vice President for Government Affairs
- Raised $62M, including $5.9M for Annual Fund, with 13,882 donors
- Began transition of Student Information System from Oracle to Matrix.
- Named four new members to the Board of Tulane.
