Semi-batch reactions - constant monomer feed

  • Free radical polymerization of acrylamide - among the different monomer feed control scenarios, one is presented below: monomer concentration in the reactor remains constant, yielding constant instantaneous number average kinetic chain length, Nn,inst as long as initiator decomposition is very small.

Top: Monomer and polymer concentrations, Cm and Cp for a monomer feed reaction (T=60C, Cm,0=0.005g/cm3). As designed, monomer concentration remains roughly constant while polymer concentration continues to increase.    Bottom: Mw for batch and semibatch polymerization reactions. Semi-batch from left. Batch conditions same, except Cm,0=0.015 g/cm3.
