Science and Engineering Recipients of Tulane 34 Awards 2013The Tulane 34 Award is presented to 34 graduates who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate life. Students are recognized for their exemplary leadership, service and academic excellence. Named for the year the university was founded, 1834, Tulane 34 is among the most coveted university-wide honor bestowed upon students.

The School of Science and Engineering proudly recognizes six science and engineering graduates that received the prestigious award in 2013.

KRISTIN ATES, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology, is a record-setting swimmer as well as a talented scholar and researcher. Kristin and her teammates won a gold medal and broke the existing record time for the 4 by 200 meter freestyle relay at the 2011 World Deaf Swimming Championship. Kristin excelled as both a student and a dedicated member of the Tulane community. She developed an entirely new set of experiments to record and analyze ultrasonic vocalizations in mice, won the 2011 Cell and Molecular Biology Ching Summer Fellowship, and a 2011 Center for Engaged Learning and Teaching Scholarly and Artistic Engagement Award. Kristin's engagement with the Tulane community is wide, from her participation in Tulane Women's Swimming and Diving, to her membership in Science and Engineering Honor Society; her volunteer work at the Tulane Stroke Rehabilitation Center and her campus organization activities in Global Medical Brigades and Relay for Life. Kristin plans to attend medical school and work in clinical care and medical research.

ANGELA CZESAK, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering, was one of 282 Goldwater Scholars selected nationwide for 2012. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier award for undergraduate students pursuing research in STEM fields. Angela participated in Duke University's Engineering World Health program in Tanzania in 2011, where she repaired and developed medical equipment for hospitals. While in Tanzania, Angela and two Tanzanian women created a cook­ book to raise money for three Tanzanian non-profits. Sales have raised more than $3000 so far. Angela's leadership and service experience includes leading Tulane Alternative Breaks and serving as an advisory board member and tennis coach for As and Aces. Angela has received many awards and honors, including the Jean Danielson Memorial Scholarship. Following graduation, Angela will start her master's degree at the University of Connecticut's Biomedical Engineering program in the fall. It is her hope that she can apply her skills in any hospital setting and improve health care around the world.

WILL GLINDMEYER, graduating with a Doctorate in Biomedical Engineering, is the co-author of a paper that may lead to new methods of pulmonary ventilation that could significantly reduce ventilator-induced lung injury. The healthcare implications could be enormous and could help up to 200,000 people nationwide. The paper was published in the Journal of Applied Physiology and led to an editorial in the journal about a possible paradigm shift in pulmonary ventilation. Will's work within Tulane is also outstanding. He has worked to further graduate students' professional development by organizing teleconferences with the School of Science and Engineering Board of Administrators. The administrators offered professional mentoring and advice on job searches. Will has also taught biomedical robotics for the Tulane Student Scholars Association and served as a teaching assistant for mathematical modeling and fluid mechanics classes. Will is planning on a career in the biotech industry and looks forward to early stage drug development being a primary focus in the future.

CHRIS HANUSCIN, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology, is an athlete, campus leader and one of Tulane's inaugural Posse Scholars. Chris was a linebacker on the Tulane football team and has been honored as a member of the 3.0 Student-Athlete Club. His time management skills are excellent as he learned to juggle the time required to be a member of the football team with his schoolwork and his many commitments within the Tulane community. Chris joined Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity his freshman year and became a pre-hearing ad­ ministrator for the Student Conduct Board. He served as vice president of society for Tulane's Men of Color student organization and as event coordinator of Generating Excellence Now and Tomorrow in Education (GENTE). Chris was a Louis Stokes Louisiana Alliance for Minority Participation scholar and participated in a pre-medical enrichment program at the UCLA School of Medicine. Chris has been accepted to the USC Keck School of Medicine and is waiting to hear from the UCLA School of Medicine. He plans to become a physician and advocate and work in medically underserved areas.

VAN KIM NGUYEN, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, has contributed greatly to Tulane and the community through her scholarship and community service. Van carried out a research project studying the role of a specific enzyme in reducing hypertension in mice and presented her results at the 2012 Experimental Biology Conference in San Diego. To complete another research project in theoretical chemistry, she learned Linux operating sys­ tem and how to write computer code. In a study that became her honors thesis, she synthesized complex molecules, some of which have shown potential antibacterial activity against MRSA. Van is a leader in Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship and helped create a video for the Drew Brees Super Service Challenge detailing the work Chi Alpha does with Unity of Greater New Orleans that resulted in a $10,000 award to Unity. She is the pianist for Mary Queen of Vietnam Church in New Orleans East and was a member of the Tulane Newcomb Choir. Van will enter LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine in the fall.

CHLOE RENSHAW, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology; has spent more than 1000 hours volunteering during her four years at Tulane. Not included in that total is the number of hours Chloe spent on call as a member of Tulane Emergency Medical Services (TEMS) -920 for this academic year alone as of February 2013. Chloe worked with Locks of Love, Habitat for Humanity and Relay for Life on the Tulane campus. Despite this heavy load of extracurricular work, Chloe excelled in her academic pursuits and is graduating with a near-perfect grade point average. Chloe contributed to several studies of post-Katrina stress and emotional responses to traumatic loss. Chloe's thesis expands on the work on trauma, depression and loss she did with the post-Katrina studies. After graduation Chloe will take a year off from school and apply to medical schools this summer. She will be working as a technician in Touro Infirmary's Emergency Department and working part-time as a lab technician at Tulane's Cancer Center.
