Public Service

Neuroscience majors can complete their service learning requirements in a number of ways. Service learning is available as an optional component to the following courses:

• Psychopharmacology (NSCI 4530/6530) - students volunteer to work with residents in outpatient substance abuse facilities
• Neurobiology of Disease (NSCI 4340/6340) - students volunteer with elderly at a local nursing home, HIV/AIDS patients in Hospice, or at the local chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society
• Methods in Neuroscience (NSCI 6150) - students volunteer with patients who suffer from brain damage or spinal cord injury
• Brain and Language (NSCI 4110/6110) - students work with a speech therapist at a local health-care provider
• Brain and Behavior (some sections) - students volunteer with patients who suffer from brain damage or spinal cord injury or with elderly residents at a nursing home, helping them with their physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy

For those students who want additional experience, they can sign up for the Service Learning Internship (NSCI 4560 [Fall] or NSCI 4570 [Spring]) which requires 70 hours of service and participation in a weekly seminar. The current seminar that is offered is “Careers in the Health Sciences”, which includes speakers from different health care professionals and readings, written assignments, and discussions about different health science fields.
