An Introduction to Ultrafilters

Will Brian - Tulane University

Abstract

The first six of the T-FACS seminars this year will be devoted to the dynamical proofs of two important combinatorial results, Hindman's Theorem and the Hales-Jewett Theorem. We will assume no advanced prior knowledge of dynamical systems theory, topology, or combinatorics, and will develop these proofs from scratch. The first week's talk will be an introduction to ultrafilters and their various uses in mathematics.
