Proficiency Requirement in Mathematics

If you are a B.A., B.F.A. or B.S. student & need to satisfy your Mathematics Proficiency requirement, the information below will help you identify a course that you can take.

B.A. & B.F.A. Students

If you scored a 4 or 5 on the AB or BC Advanced Placement (AP) exam, congratulations, you've already satisfied you math requirement.

If this is not the case, you'll need to take one course in mathematics. Use the chart below to help figure out which class is best for you.

Course	Description
Math 1110 Probability and Statistics I	Prerequisite: High School Algebra. This class serves as an introductory statistics course with no Calculus.
Math 1140 Statistics for Business	Prerequisite: High School Algebra and INFO 1010. This course serves as an introductory statistics course for those with interests in business.
Math 1150 Introduction to Calculus	Prerequisite: High School Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. This course is an introduction to Calculus I.
Math 1210 Calculus I	Prerequisite: High School Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. This course covers all the materials of Calculus I.
Math 1310 Consolidated Calculus	Prerequisite: A prior knowledge of Calculus. A score of 3 or higher in the Calculus AP test or permission of the undergraduate. A student may not receive credit for both 1220 and 1310. Students with no prior AP credit in calculus may gain credit for 121 by getting a B- or better in 1310 in addition to credit in 1310.

B.S. Students

If you're a Bachelor of Science student, you'll need six math credits (2 courses). Use the chart to figure out AP credit (if any) that you can use for the requirement.

I don't have any AP credits

If this is the case, then you must satisfy 2 course credits in one of the following ways:

1. If you want to take Calculus I over 2 semesters you must take the following courses:

   
   
   • Math 1150 & Math 1160 (Long Calculus) This is a slower version of Math 1210 (Calculus I) so it only counts as one course towards your requirement even though it lasts 2 semesters. Note: Math 1150 alone does not count towards your math requirement. However, taken with Math 1106, together they count for one course.
   • Math 1220 (Calculus II)

2. If you want to finish Calculus I in 1semester you must take the following:

   
   
   • Math 1210 (Calculus I)
   • & Math 1220 (Calculus II) or Math 1230

I have AP credit for Math 1210 (Calculus I)

You should take Math 1310 (Consolidated Calculus).
