Writing Intensive Requirement-
B.Wee noted that all courses with required field trips need to have this information in their course description, in order to let students know when they sign up for the class that there are required to attend these additional sessions.
After a discussion regarding the possibility of creating a stand-alone writing intensive course, similar to service learning stand-alone courses, it was decided by the committee that the current practice for handling the writing intensive requirement through petition satisfies the needs of the students and spreads out the work load for the professors. B.Wee will keep a record of all writing intensive petitions and will send e-mail reminders to students and professors about the extra work needed to be completed by students.
S.Darwin asked if the extra papers required for the writing intensive requirement should be part of the student’s grade in the course. After T.Hebert and N.Hopkins explained their rules regarding writing intensive papers, it was explained that the grade of the paper and its weight in the course’s overall grade is up to the discretion of the professor.
Newcomb-Tulane Catalog Description- B.Wee had asked all committee members to e-mail any revisions to Newcomb-Tulane’s School of Science and Engineering Catalog Description to her. C.Pizer noted that the Math requirements, specifically the AB and BC exam qualifications needed to be clarified. N.Hopkins agreed. A.Vitter will review the Math paragraph in the catalog description and send B. Wee an accurate and revised version.
600 Level courses –B.Wee asked all department representatives to e-mail to her what a 600-level course means for their department/program.
Double majors/minors – B.Wee asked all department representatives to e-mail to her what the restrictions are for double majoring or minoring in their department/program.
