John Barnwell, Tulane Superintendent of Police, and Rick Potts, Uptown Campus Police Chief, joined the group to discuss campus security. They said that the Tulane police department is preparing for CALEA accreditation. A strategic plan is being developed which involves establishment of a campus-wide security management system and a customer-focus emphasis. They drew attention to the new police department web site. There was a discussion period during which input was sought from the group.
Doug Olson, Director of Card Services, said that installation of the new magnetic strip/chip security system is now 95% complete for Stern Hall. Such a system has already been installed in Boggs and Israel. He now needs guidance on access control. The group discussed the hours that these buildings should be locked and who should have access after hours. It was agreed that faculty and staff would have 24/7 access and that individual students would have after hour access upon faculty request.
Beth Wee, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, said that she continues to work with the Department Chairs and with Newcomb-Tulane College to identify resources to cover additional sections of service courses to accommodate the larger than projected undergraduate enrollment. She also went over the logistics of several events associated with graduation.
Carol Burdsal, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, went over the doctoral program review process and itemized what the programs who are scheduled for review this coming year need to be doing now. She then went over the status of courses offered to graduate students on accent reduction, ESL writing, and scientific writing. There was a discussion about the enrollment on these courses and the need for faculty advisers to bring these courses to the attention of their students, particularly those who could most benefit.
The group thanks Dean Burdsal for the excellent job she has done as Associate Dean and wished her well in her new position at Bucknell University.
Sandy Parker, Assistant Dean for Finance and Personnel, reminded the group that unit hurricane plans for the 2012 hurricane season are now due and emphasized that contact information should be filed separately from the body of the plans as the plans will be posted to a web site whereas the contact lists will be distributed only to those individuals who need them.
Kat Engleman, Senior Director of Development, reminded the group that June 30 is the end of the fiscal year and it is important to book pending gifts by that date so that they can be counted in fiscal year 2011–12. She also reminded the group that the dedication ceremony for Flower Hall is scheduled for December 11. The alumni database has now been converted to the ADVANCE system and Department Chairs are urged to submit information on their graduating seniors to Kat or directly to TUBIO@tulane.edu so that they can be entered into the new database. The University is focusing on senior class giving in order to initiate a habit of giving among our most recent alumni.
Dean Nick Altiero updated the group on the final reports of three task forces that he had appointed this past year: Professor of the Practice Appointments, Shop Services, and Shared Facilities. He also reminded the Department Chairs that they need to provide the names of departmental representatives to the following SSE committees for 2012–13: Curriculum, Graduate Studies, Grievance, Nominating, and Alumni Relations.
