The minutes of the meeting of 30 August 2007 were approved unanimously.
Honors Board Operations – Mary Ann Maguire, Associate Dean of Newcomb-Tulane College
There is a single honor code for all undergraduate students. Mary Ann Maguire is the contact person for this program. Bring instances of academic misconduct to her attention, via a letter, with accusation; e.g. plagiarism. Instructors are encouraged to mention in each syllabus that academic misconduct will be reported to the Honor Board. 52 cases were brought before the Honor Board last year, with 37 cases going to hearings. There is a copy of the Honor Board booklet on the Newcomb-Tulane College website.
Undergraduate Course and Curriculum Changes – Prof. David Rice
Changing programs or adding courses of study must go before the SSE Undergraduate Studies Committee (USC). Lab courses must be approved by the USC to fulfill the lab science distribution requirement.
The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology has introduced an undergraduate fellows program in which students will be awarded small honoraria and will act as peer tutors.
The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology proposed a new minor in Marine Biology which has been approved by the USC and is being presented for faculty approval. After some discussion, the new minor passed unanimously.
A motion was introduced to change some of the requirements for the coordinate major in Psychology-Early Childhood Education, resulting in a BA degree rather than a BS degree. This degree program is coordinated with the Teacher Certification Program. There are no other BA degrees offered in the School of Science and Engineering. After some discussion, the motion (alternative 2 in the 11 July 2007 memorandum from Carol Burdsal to Janet Ruscher) passed unanimously, and it will now be submitted to the School of Liberal Arts for their approval.
A representative of the advising center will attend all future USC meetings to make certain that students are aware of all changes.
Graduate Course and Curriculum Changes – Associate Dean Gary McPherson
The University Graduate Council (UGC), which is university-wide, still exists within the framework of the renewal plan. The School of Science and Engineering has 3 elected representatives on the UGC. Within this context, the following motion was made by the SSE Graduate Studies Committee (GSC):
- The Graduate Studies Committee is empowered to act for the faculty of the School of Science and Engineering with respect to approving routine curriculum changes. These include but may not be limited to: new courses; discontinuance of courses; change of course title, number, description, and academic credit; changes to course requirements for graduate programs.
- All curriculum changes approved by the committee shall be reported at least annually to the SSE faculty and the Graduate Council.
- More substantive curriculum changes (e.g. new programs of study or their discontinuance, and changes to degree requirements) shall be approved by the SSE faculty after consultation by the Graduate Studies Committee and referred to the Graduate Council for approval.
- The Graduate Studies Committee shall establish its own procedures for receiving and considering proposed curriculum changes.
The amendments in bold italics were proposed by Associate Provost Brian Mitchell. The motion, with amendments, passed with no objections and three abstentions.
A motion to establish a new 4+1 MS program in Computational Science was made by the GSC. This program is highly interdisciplinary and available to students majoring in any BS program with the appropriate prerequisites. It will be administered by the Center for Computational Science. The motion to adopt the program passed unanimously.
It was suggested that, in the future, all proposals that are being brought to the faculty for a vote be distributed well in advance of the faculty meeting. Dean Altiero agreed that this needs to be a School policy.
Faculty Annual Evaluation Process – Dean Nicholas Altiero
Each faculty member must submit by February 1, 2008 a faculty annual activity report, for which an MS Word template is available on the SSE website. The report must have current CV
attached. A number of contentious issues are involved in merit raises etc. and were briefly discussed.
More time will be devoted to considering the faculty load portion this year as special attention will be given to defining each faculty members load distribution. Nominally a 3 credit course counts for 30% load in a given semester and faculty members who do not have administrative assignments are expected to devote 10% each semester to service activities. Using these guidelines, it would be expected that time not allocated to teaching or service would be devoted to research. When each of the Department Chairs meets with the Dean in February to discuss faculty performance, the appropriateness of load distribution for each faculty member will also be discussed.
In response to a question, the Dean assured all that professor of practice raises will be commensurate with the average raises; i.e. there is no plan to shift any portion of their raise pool to tenured and tenure track faculty.
