Jonathan Marshak Receives Louisiana Sea Grant Funding

Geology junior, Jonathan Marshak has received a $2500 undergraduate research award from the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program of the Louisiana Sea Grant College.

The title of Jonathan's research is "Mapping a recent crevasse splay: grain size analysis of facies in the Attakapas crevasse splay." He will study the lithologic composition of a crevasse splay formed by Bayou Lafourche near Napoleonville, Louisiana by means of geological mapping and grain-size measurements.

The aim of the study is to quantify sediment trapping efficiency in swamp environments in the Mississippi Delta. His research can help to place coastal restoration by river diversion at locations which can potentially have high sediment trapping efficiency.

Jonathan will conduct fieldwork over spring break and lab work over the course of the summer and fall semester 2011. He will finish this project by the end of 2011. He is working under the guidance of Professor Torbjörn Törnqvist, Dr. Zhixiong Shen, and Jennifer Kuykendall. He is the third Earth and Environmental Sciences student to receive award funding this past year.
