Additional Information about the Position

  • The responsibilities of Professors of the Practice are instruction and activities related to instruction; the teaching load is three courses (including appropriate labs) per semester. The position is defined as 90% teaching and 10% service.

  • We are interested in someone who is able to teach marine biology and other marine and coastal science classes. The EEB department currently offers two minors in Marine Biology (one for EEB majors and one for majors from other departments). Part of the responsibility of this PoP is to administer the marine biology minors and act as an advisor for undergraduate students enrolled in these programs. Additionally the candidate will be expected to help shape the future marine and coastal programs within the department.

  • The PoP may develop and teach other courses outside the area of marine and coastal sciences if s/he has relevant expertise so as to broaden the scope of the undergraduate curriculum within the EEB department. For example, the incumbent PoP who is retiring (John Caruso) has taught at different times varying combinations of Marine Biology, Marine Invertebrates, Marine Fish Ecology, Sharks & Their Relatives, Vertebrate Biology, Vertebrate Morphology, and Human Physiology (with accompanying Mammalian Anat. & Hist. Lab)

  • Professors of the Practice are appointed with multi-year contracts that are renewable. The initial appointment is for three years. After the second three-year appointment (six years total), the PoP may be promoted to Senior Professor of the Practice with 5-year contracts.

  • Professors of the Practice largely serve the undergraduate teaching mission, but they may also be involved in graduate education. Some of the courses taught may be offered to both undergraduates and graduate students. Professors of the Practice do not act as primary advisors to PhD students but may be a member of dissertation committees for graduate students and also may supervise independent research of 4+1 master’s students.
