Program Requirements

Freshman Program

program-reqStudents who take chemistry to satisfy the science requirement of the B.A. curriculum must elect Chemistry 1070 and 1170. Science majors, engineering students, and students fulfilling medical school requirements should take Chemistry 1070 and 1170 and 1080 and 1180. One semester placement credit will be awarded with an AP score of "4" and a full year with an AP score of 5. In addition, advanced placement may be granted in accordance with the results of a special placement examination given upon petition.

Major Program

Students majoring in chemistry must satisfy the general requirements of the B.S. curriculum. Chemistry 1070 and 1170; 1080 and 1180; 2410 and 2430; 2420 and 2440; 3110; 3120; 3140 and 5110 and one of the lecture-lab combinations, 2310, 2330 or 3210 and 3230, or 3310 and 3330; Mathematics 1210, 1220 or 1410, 1420, plus 2210 and 2240; and Physics 1310 and 1320 are required of all chemistry majors. In order to complete the major, three additional, three-credit courses above the 1000 level are required. List of approved elective courses for the chemistry major. Check with the Chemistry Department for approval of other courses.

Students intending to pursue graduate work in chemistry or in an allied interdisciplinary program of graduate work is contemplated, should elect advanced chemistry courses, including 4010 and/or 4020 to complete the major. Close consultation with their department advisors will assure development of a program which can be recommended for graduate work.

The Department of Chemistry is fully accredited by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society. The ACS will certify a degree which includes 1070 and 1170, 1080 and 1180, 2410 and 2430, 2420 and 2440, 3110 and 3120 and 3140, 3210 and 3230, 4230, 2310 and 2330, 3310 eight credits of research, and one advanced course in chemistry, mathematics or physics.

Premedical students should elect Chemistry 1070 and 1170, 1080 and 1180, and 2410 and 2430 and 2420 and 2440 or their equivalents. In addition, Chemistry 2310 and 2330 are strongly recommended.

Minor Program

A minor in chemistry consists of Chemistry 1070 and 1170 or Chemistry H1090 and H1110 and Chemistry 1080 and 1180 or Chemistry H1100 and H1120 plus four additional courses in chemistry chosen in consultation with the chemistry department. Prior approval of the choice of these courses and co-registration in appropriate laboratory courses is required. Only one semester of research may be counted towards the minor. For students whose major requires Chemistry 1070 and 1170 and Chemistry 1080 and 1180 at least one of the additional four courses must be one not required by that major. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the biological chemistry major, students in this program may not minor in chemistry or biology.
