Multiscale and Multimodality Genomic Imaging Informatics
In the current post-genome era, high resolution genetic probes evolved from Human Genome Sequencing Project have been developed. When combined with imaging techniques, they provide multiscale structural information about genome variations and add a new dimension to gene expression analysis. The combination of structural imaging with gene expression promises a comprehensive and systematic approach for the study of multiscale biological systems. However, fulfilling the promise calls for powerful analytic techniques to handle and mine the vast amount of signal and image data generated by these high resolution imaging probes, giving rise to an emerging field of genomic imaging informatics. In this talk, I will review the latest progress in multiscale genomic imaging, discuss bioinformatics challenges, and show the applications of innovative signal and image processing approaches such as wavelets to address these challenges. A variety of genomic data processing examples such as classification of chromosome images, extraction of quantitative imaging features, and integration of multiscale genomic information will be presented.
