Juan Hinestroza, a 2002 Ph.D. graduate from our department, has been promoted to associate professor with tenure at Cornell University. Hinestroza works in the area of polymer rheology, in particular, on understanding fundamental phenomena at the nanoscale that are of relevance to fiber and polymer science.
Hinestroza currently directs the Textiles Nanotechnology Laboratory at the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Prior to obtaining his Ph.D., he worked as a process control engineer for the Dow Chemical Company.
In his academic career, Hinestroza received more than $5 million in research funding, so far. He has been the recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the J.D. Watson Young Investigator Award from NYSTAR and the Educator of the Year Award from the Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers.
Hinestroza has presented invited lectures worldwide and his work has been featured in journals such as Nature Nanotechnology, MRS Bulletin and Materials Today, to name just a few, as well as in mainstream media outlets such as CNN, ABC News, PBS and BBC.
In addition to his scientific endeavors, Hinestroza and his research group are actively involved in community outreach activities.
