Kate Elfer, a second year doctoral student in Professor Quincy Brown’s lab, was awarded a $2000 scholarship by the Louisiana Engineering Society at their meeting in Lafayette. The Vincent A. Forte Graduate School Fellowship is given annually to one student enrolled in a graduate program in engineering who expresses a sincere desire to enter the teaching profession at the University level upon completion of his or her graduate education.
Kate came to Tulane in 2012 after earning a BS in Nanosystems Engineering at Louisiana Tech. As the daughter of an engineer, she has had more opportunities than many children to understand the amazing ingenuity made possible by engineers. Her father, a materials engineer and Adjunct Professor of Engineering Physics at Tulane, coached her robotics team and her father’s friends showed her Girl Scout Troup how laser traveling through a plastic tube can warp it. As a graduate student, she has continued to build new and useful tools – this time microscopy equipment for the medical field. She loves talking with undergraduate students about all the exciting breakthroughs happening in science, and helping them get involved with research early in their career. She wants to be a professor that helps students of all backgrounds and abilities understand that they can succeed and keep engineering new and exciting. Katherine is very involved with K-12 Outreach for the School of Science and Engineering and in the New Orleans community. She enjoys spending her time showing younger students age appropriate scientific activities and helping them learn more about how science impacts their lives. She also works with other volunteer organizations, such as NO-AIDS and Relay for Life. In her spare time she attends steampunk meetings, the Louisiana Renaissance festival, and participates in the local Writers Guilds.
The award is named to honor Vincent A. Forte, P.E., a founder and first president of the Louisiana Engineering Foundation.
