History

About the Department

The Department was founded in 1977, so we are a relatively mature department in a new field — a field in which the potential for making meaningful contributions is unlimited. Our backgrounds are diverse, covering the areas of biomechanics, biomaterials, bioelectronics, biotransport and cell and tissue engineering. Our undergraduate and graduate teaching and research programs are extensive.


  • Established: 1977 with B.S.E., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering
  • Accredited: Since 1981 by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)
  • Faculty: 12 full-time faculty members
  • Enrollment: Approximately 200 undergraduate students in Biomedical Engineering; 50 graduate students
