The Tulane University Heart and Vascular Institute (TUHVI) encompasses leading clinical, educational and research programs for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. TUHVI offers a comprehensive heart and vascular program at four locations – Metairie, downtown New Orleans, New Orleans East, and on the West Bank at Woodland Drive and General deGaulle.
TUHVI physicians include specialized medical professionals trained in nuclear cardiology, arrhythmia and atrial fibrillation, heart failure, prevention services, hypertension, and lipid management, as well as interventional cardiovascular procedures and cardiac surgery. The Institute is a leader in treating peripheral arterial and venous disease. The new painless Endovenous Laser Treatment for varicose veins, as well as sclerotherapy for spider vein closure, is offered at the TUHVI West Bank Clinic.
Because TUHVI physicians and surgeons are also academicians, patients can be assured that each case is thoroughly reviewed and all available treatment options are considered. TUHVI faculty are leaders of research and development in their subspecialty, often sharing their knowledge by lecturing around the country regarding the latest methods of treating cardiac and peripheral artery disease. TUHVI physicians also serve as clinical investigators, participating in a growing number of clinical trials.
Tulane University Hospital and Clinic was the first accredited Chest Pain Center in the state of Louisiana. The Tulane University School of Public School of Health and Tropical Medicine with the Tulane University Heart and Vascular Institute is the site of the world-renowned Bogalusa heart study, a population-based longitudinal study of cardiac risk factors which has been under the direction of Dr. Gerald Berenson for more than 40 years. Tulane University Heart and Vascular Institute, under the directorship of Dr. Patrice Delafontaine, is the recipient of four additional NIH grants to conduct cardiovascular research.
