Student Org Spotlight: Family Medicine Interest Group
The Family Medicine Interest Group at Tulane is the local chapter of a national organization. We are active in both the state and national levels through the LAFP and AAFP. We work with the Family and Community Medicine Department at Tulane in order to host events that will attract students into a career in Family Medicine. Throughout the year we host guest speakers, clinical skill workshops, service learning with Tar Wars, and social events. Our guest speakers in the past have spoken on topics as diverse as rural practice in Louisiana to a mission practice in Peru. Through Tar Wars we go to local elementary schools and teach students about the dangers of smoking as well as the benefits of staying smoke free. Our clinical skills workshops bring in experts to teach students about procedures that Family Medicine physicians can use in their practice. We raise money for our local charity, Edible School Yard, each year during the Powder Puff flag football game.
