James R. Korndorffer, Jr., MD
Medical Director

James R. Korndorffer, Jr., MD, FACS, is an Associate Professor of Surgery, Program Director for the Surgery Residency, and the Medical Director of the Tulane Center for Advanced Medical Simulation and Team Training.   He received his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from Tulane University, and his medical degree from the University Of South Florida College Of Medicine. His general surgery residency was completed at The Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. While there, he was awarded the Best Teaching Resident Award.   After seven years in private practice Dr. Korndorffer returned to academic medicine by completing a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at Tulane and joining the faculty at Tulane.   He is actively involved in numerous national societies including the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the Association for Surgical Education, and the Association for Academic Surgeons.  He serves on the Guidelines and Resident Education Committees of SAGES.  Dr Korndorffer has had over 30 published papers and abstracts in peer reviewed journals as well as over 40 presentations at national meetings. Dr Korndorffer’s clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery for gastrointestinal disorders and hernias.  His research interests include surgical education and surgical simulation.

 

Jennifer Calzada, MA
Director

Jennifer Calzada, MA, is a 17 year veteran of marketing and business development. After 8 years at advertising agencies, she moved on to the ad sales division of Cox Communications and eventually became a Regional Director at Cox Media, where she helped the corporate marketing team win numerous national awards. She has now taken on the challenge of the Sim Center Director, to help establish the Tulane Sim Center as an efficient and effective operation for the School of Medicine and work with the greater healthcare community to bring the benefits of high-fidelity simulation training to their systems to reduce medical error and ultimately increase patient safety.

 

N. Kevin Krane, MD
Director of Team Training

N. Kevin Krane, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs.  A graduate of Michigan State University with high honor and Tulane University School of Medicine, he completed his residency and chief residency in internal medicine and fellowship in nephrology and hypertension at Henry Ford Hospital before joining the faculty at Tulane.  He has also served as a Harvard-Macy Fellow in medical education reform.  Widely published in medical education, he has been an invited presenter at numerous educational meetings. A nationally recognized medical educator, he has served as Chair of the AAMC’s Southern Group on Educational Affairs.  He has also served as site host for the 8th Annual Meeting of the International Association of Medical Science Educators and the SGEA’s Regional Meeting in New Orleans in April 2009.  At Tulane, he has been recognized with teaching awards at every level including the Tulane University Medical Center Teaching Scholar Award and the Tulane University President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Krane is a TeamSTEPPS™ Master Trainer and is directly involved in the training of healthcare personnel and the national implementation of TeamSTEPPS™.  His academic interests are renal disease in pregnancy and enhancement of medical student education.


Leah Odeneal
S
enior Program Coordinator

Leah Odeneal is the Training Center Coordinator.  As TC Coordinator, she is the primary contact for the AHA and oversees the operations of the TC.  She works with instructors and training site coordinators to ensure that all courses adhere to AHA guidelines. Leah joined the Sim Center team in June 2013. 

 

Cheri Touchard
Simulation Specialist

Cheri Touchard has been in the medical research field for over 20 years.  She spent the past 7 years as a simulation specialist at the Tulane Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery, and has been with the Tulane University School of Medicine for 8 1/2 years.

Kyle Hughes
Simulation Specialist

Kyle has been with the Simulation Center for 2 years. He came to the Sim Center in January 2012 as an AHA Program Assistant. Being around the bourgeoning field of medical simulation piqued his interest and he joined the Simulation staff in October of 2012. Constantly learning new applications for simulation, Kyle is interested in pushing forward and helping facilitate an expanded student and residency curriculum at Tulane University School of Medicine.
