Lab probes stem cell potential
February 3, 2012Tulane researchers are developing new nanomaterials to study how adult stem cells grow and might be used to treat central nervous system disorders. Leading this research is Michael Moore, the Paul H. and Donna D. Flower Early Career Professor in Engineering, director of the Neural Micro-Engineering Laboratory, and the most recent winner of the Oliver Fund Scholar Award at Tulane University.

Dr. Ali Betancourt has been notified that she will be funded by the Department of Defense for her work on MSCs and their role in Tumor Growth and Spread.

The Role of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Promoting Tumor Growth and Spread
Dr. Betancourt says, “Our long-term goal is to identify the molecular details behind the role MSCs play in supporting cancer growth and spread, while at the same time to use MSC1 in re-mastered tumor therapies. The objective here, which is our next step in pursuit of that goal, is to determine the anti-tumor effect of MSC1-based therapy in a mouse model and identify the anti-tumor mechanisms behind the MSC1 effect”.

Dr. Ryan Bonvillain, wins travel award for abstract submission in Stem Cells and Cellular Therapies in Lung Biology and Lung Diseases
July 17, 2011Dr. Ryan Bonvillain, a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Bruce Bunnell, has won a travel award for the abstract he submitted for the prestigious Stem Cells and Cellular Therapies in Lung Biology and Lung Diseases. The abstract is titled "Characterization of acellular matrices derived from the lungs of Rhesus macaques and the potential for bioartificial lung regeneration with stem cells."
