Medical Education Mini Grants Program

Purpose:

The mini grant awards are intended to promote collaboration and synergy among faculty of Tulane University School of Medicine, to strongly encourage educational research relationships between departments within the institution, and to foster research and scholarship in undergraduate medical education:

Under the guidance of the Society for Medical Education Research, the Mini Grant Program will support:

  • Expanding the base of nationally competitive undergraduate medical education research activity leading to the potential for increased extramural support for medical education research at Tulane University
  • Elevating the visibility and reputation of Tulane University School of Medicine Faculty for teaching excellence and scholarly accomplishment
  • Strengthening the school’s educational offerings by providing medical students and junior faculty with opportunities to participate in educational research, scholarship, and creative activity
  • Stimulating the intellectual environment at Tulane University School of Medicine

Full-time faculty may apply for Undergraduate Medical Education Research Mini Grants for up to $2000 to support innovations in teaching and learning activities that will lead to research in undergraduate medical education.  Grants can be used in a variety of ways, including support for teaching–related supplies, materials, services, and travel. 

Proposed activities shall take place during the 2013-2014 academic year.  Final reports for funded projects are due to the OME by September 30, 2014


Proposal Requests for Funding:

Support for expenses normally covered by departments/colleges (office supplies, photocopying, etc.) or routine books/videos for you to use will not be funded.  However, budget requests may include:

  • Specialty manuals/handbooks/materials to improve your teaching or innovate your course (s),
  • Purchasing and integrating instructional technology materials and supplies into your courses in new ways,
  • Support for travel to medical education conferences (provided the  attendee presents a workshop about the conference upon return),
  • Funding for special services related to teaching.

Eligibility:

All full-time lecturers and faculty may submit proposals for Undergraduate Medical Education Research Mini Grants. 

 

Application Procedure:

Interested candidates should submit their application/proposal to the OME electronically.

Award criteria include:

  • The project must address some aspect of undergraduate medical education.
  • A clear description of your proposal, with an itemized budget
  • A description of the innovation represented by your proposal
  • A description of the anticipated contribution to teaching and learning
  • The scope of your proposal’s benefit  (how many classes, students, colleagues)
  • The longevity of your proposal (one semester only? More than one semester?)
  • Evidence of previous efforts to attract other funding

Follow-up:

All award recipients shall submit a brief final report summarizing their activities by September 30, 2014 (unless the project extends beyond this date; and, in that case, by one semester following the conclusion of the research project).  With permission, effective and innovative projects will be included on the OME Best Practices list and posted on the OME website. Recipients who attend a teaching conference shall share materials from the conference and present a workshop at TUSOM on what they learned. In addition, selected mini grant recipients may be invited to present their projects.
