Leadership in Medicine

Dr. Palmisano is a Tulane School of Medicine graduate, a past president of the AMA, and a past president of the Louisiana State Medical Society. He is a Clinical Professor of Surgery and of Medical Jurisprudence at Tulane University School of Medicine. He is also the founder and president of the Intrepid Resources, a company that provides independent risk management and claims review services for health care professionals.
This seminar will highlight the essential elements of leadership presented in Dr. Palmisano’s 2008 book, “On Leadership - Essential Principles for Success.” True stories of leaders in action will be presented. Students will discuss how to use leadership principles to solve the challenges facing Medicine in the 21st Century including the medical liability crisis, the uninsured, and third-party control of Medicine. Clear communication in writing and speaking will be stressed as well as techniques for dealing with the media to ensure that your message of advancing ethical, science-based, Medicine is delivered clearly, concisely, and effectively.
Goals and Objectives:
1- Success in 21st Century Medicine will require leadership. The twenty elements of effective leadership will be presented. Students will become familiar with techniques to influence and protect the ethical practice of Medicine in the health care system.
2- Leadership mandates that the art and science of Medicine be maintained in a compassionate and appropriate way. The goal is to understand that science, ethics, compassion, courage, consent, and doing what is in the patient’s best interest are the key commandments in the practice of Medicine. Students will be able to identify appropriate applications of the six key commandments.
3- The use of modern technology to rapidly gather knowledge is important, and the goal is for the student to be familiar and capable of using technology to gather information within minutes. Students will be able to locate relevant medical information from online resources within a specified time frame.
4- Understand that improvement in patient safety and overall quality requires the “systems” approach to analyze errors rather than the “shame and blame” reaction. Students will be able to explain the benefits of the "systems" approach to quality health care and patient safety.
5- Become an effective communicator by learning the written and oral presentation skills. Opportunity will be provided to participate in interviews to learn effective message delivery.
6- Learn the importance of team work and how to avoid ignorance of the patient’s total care due to focusing just on your specialty's part of the patient’s body. Students will be ale to discuss the importance of team work and a holistic perspective in health care.
