FACULTY MEDICAL EDUCATION AWARDS

University Awards | Health Sciences Center Awards | School of Medicine Awards

Each year Tulane University, the School of Medicine, and the Health Sciences Center award professors who have exemplified excellence in teaching.  The follow is a list of awards available, when they are awarded, and how to apply.


TULANE UNIVERSITY AWARDS

President’s Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional School Teaching
The goal of this award is to recognize and reward full-time faculty who have sustained a compelling record of excellence in teaching and learning and an ongoing commitment to educational excellence in a graduate or professional school.  The recipient of this award will receive a check for $5,000 and a medal designed by Professor Emeritus Franklin Adams.

President’s Recognition Certificates
A faculty member is recognized in each of the following categories: dissertation director, innovative use of technology in teaching and interdisciplinary teaching.

To apply:
Each dean designates a committee to select one candidate for the President’s Award and one candidate for each of the Recognition Certificate categories.  A letter of nomination, a complete curriculum vitae and the candidate’s statement about teaching and learning should be submitted in a standard three ring binder.

Deadline for nominations from each dean must be submitted to the provost’s office by March 15.

TULANE UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER AWARDS

School of Medicine Teaching Scholar Award (formerly known as the Senior Vice President’s Teaching Scholar Award)
This award recognizes full-time faculty members’ significant records of teaching scholarship and accomplishments, and ongoing commitments to enhancing continuously the quality of teaching and learning at Tulane University Health Sciences Center.  This is an annual award bestowed on one faculty member in the School of Medicine and one faculty member in the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.  The recipients of this prestigious award are identified by a selection committee comprised of past Teaching Scholar awardees, faculty members, residents/fellows and students.  The award includes:

  • A permanent base salary increase of $3,000,
  • Recognition at an annual award program,
  • A plaque for the recipient's office and a lapel pin reflecting this distinction,
  • Induction into the TUHSC Society of Teaching Scholars,
  • Recognition on a plaque representing this award that is displayed in the dean's conference room of the School of Medicine and the School of Public Health on the 12th Floor of the Tidewater Building.

To apply:
Those who wish to be considered for the Teaching Scholar Award must submit:

  • A complete teaching vita,
  • Three letters of nomination (from the Chair of the candidate's department, one full-time faculty member, and a student or resident/fellow from the candidate's school),
  • A narrative that includes the applicant's unique perspectives and accomplishments, 
  • Appendices that indicate key evidence supporting the applicant's achievements and contributions that meet the selection criteria.

TULANE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AWARDS

Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award (presented by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation)
The award is presented to the faculty member who best demonstrates the ideals of outstanding compassion in the delivery of care, respect for patients, their families, and healthcare colleagues and demonstrated clinical excellence.  The recipient should be approachable and accessible, display effective communication with listening skills and exhibit enthusiasm in personal and professional interactions with students and patients.  The award includes a certificate and a check for $1,000, presented at graduation.  The awardee is automatically inducted into the Tulane University School of Medicine Humanism in Medicine Honor Society.

To apply:
A faculty member may be nominated by a graduating fourth year medical student or another faculty member.  Nominations must include:

  • A cover sheet,
  • An original statement written and signed by he nominator with specific evidence in support of the nomination criteria and a brief narrative explaining why the candidate should be considered,
  • A copy of the nominee's current curriculum vitae,
  • Signatures of three nominators (faculty and/or fourth year students).

Tulane University Health Sciences Center Auxiliary Teaching Excellence Award
This award was established to recognize and continue the development of a member of the basic science faculty with outstanding potential in medical education.  The award recipient must be in the first three years of his/her teaching career and be an assistant/associate professor with a full-time, tenure track appointment in a Basic Science Department at the time of nomination.  An award of $3,000 will be made to a single recipient every three years and may not be given to the same individual more than once.

To apply:
Applicants must submit the following documents:

  • A current curriculum vita,
  • A brief essay from the candidate that includes personal goals, philosophy and accomplishments in medical education as well as how award funds will enhance his/her ability to provide medical education  and benefit the School of Medicine, 
  • Separate letters of support from the course director and the candidate's department chair.

Virginia Furrow Medical Education Award

Nominees for this award should have developed one or more of the following:

  • A new method of teaching,
  • A major syllabus or other educational materials,
  • An innovative educational program,
  • A new and effective evaluation instrument or approach

An award of $500 will be made to a single recipient every two years as well as the inscription of the faculty member’s name on the Furrow Award plaque in the dean’s conference room.

To apply:
Applicants must submit the following documents:

  • A letter of nomination from the candidate's department chair (nominations should be submitted in writing, should clearly indicate the reasons for excellence and should be based on peer-reviewed assessment), 
  • A nominee should also provide evidence that his/her educational contributions have been adopted or recognized by the peers.
