Mentoring is an invaluable opportunity for students to explore and develop their careers with the guidance of a mentor. Mentoring involves developing a relationship with a physician or faculty member through conversations ranging from information about the specialty, residency application advice, career and life goals, and other topics. While many medical students will seek mentors within their chosen field, mentoring relationships with physicians and faculty members outside of their chosen field can be just as enriching. Students are encouraged to seek out a mentor or mentors throughout their basic science and clinical years. If students are unsure of who to approach, the Medical Specialties and Contacts section will provide you with contacts in each specialty, and the Tulane Medical Alumni Association has also compiled a list of alumni physician mentors.
