The postdoctoral/fellowship programs of the Human Genetics Program are an integral part of the Hayward Genetics Center educational mission, along with the masters and Ph.D programs. These educational programs draw from the comprehensive genetics services that include research, teaching, patient care and diagnostic laboratory support.

The postdoctoral fellowship program was first accredited by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) in 1984 and currently includes training in Clinical Cytogenetics, Clinical Biochemical Genetics, Clinical Molecular Genetics and Ph.D. Medical Genetics which is provided by faculty who are board-certified in the respective disciplines. The Hayward Genetics Center has particular strengths in the areas of metabolic genetics (especially lysosomal storage disorders), DNA methylation studies, and Alu and LINE repeats.

Within the last several years, accreditation for training programs in M.D. Clinical Genetics was assumed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). In 1996, the Human Genetics Program was granted accreditation to provide 2 years of residency training to physicians who have successfully completed at least 2 years of residency training in another ACGME-accredited residency program. In addition to the facilities of the Hayward Genetics Center which is located within Tulane University's School of Medicine, clinical training is also provided at Tulane University Hospital and Clinic, the Medical Center of Louisiana, University Hospital and three satellite clinics operated by the State of Louisiana Genetic Disease Program.
