What is Match Day?
Match Day is the culmination of four challenging years, and, in some ways, is the most exciting day of the medical school experience. Students discover where they will complete their residencies as they continue on the road to becoming practicing physicians.
How does Match Day work?
Every year at a predetermined time, medical students across the country learn simultaneously which hospital will educate them for the next three to seven years. A residency is the next step after graduation from medical school. The students will spend three to six years in specialized training depending on their area of practice.
Up until Match Day, senior medical students completed numerous applications and interviews at their residencies of their choice. They ranked the places where they would like to continue their medical training. The residency programs in turn ranked the applicants and the National Resident Matching Program produced the computer-generated matches.
What happens at the Match Day event at Tulane School of Medicine?
During the program, medical student names are randomly selected by Dr. Marc Kahn, Senior Associate Dean for Students. Each student receives an envelope containing a letter with information about their residency.
As part of another medical school tradition, medical students place $5.00 in a container as they arrive at the event. The last person called gets to keep all the money as a reward for patience in the face of high anxiety.
