Welcome to the Tulane Abdominal Wall Reconstruction and Hernia Center. Here, our surgeons specialize in all types of hernia repair from the traditional, open technique to laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery.
Each year, Tulane surgeons perform nearly 900 hernia repairs affording them expertise in both common and complex cases. More importantly, patients complete a comprehensive evaluation with a board-certified surgeon to determine the best surgical procedure to avoid repeat hernias and complications.
Specialized Treatment Services Our team of specialists offers a full range of diagnostic and treatment services designed to provide hernia patients with the most effective care possible. We offer a wide range of both minimally invasive and standard (open) procedures.
Leaders in the Field
Tulane Hernia Center surgeons have a tremendous amount of experience with hernia repair, and specialize in the most difficult cases. Our surgeons excel in treating both complex cases -- such as recurrent hernias -- and more routine cases They are up-to-date with the latest minimally invasive trends and techniques, some of which they've helped to pioneer. Tulane Hernia Center surgeon Charles Bellows-- head of General Surgery at Tulane University and Associate professor of surgery at the University-- is a nationally known leader in laparoscopic surgery and teaches future doctors and community doctors how to perform these procedures.
Multidisciplinary Treatment Approach
Our multidisciplinary treatment approach benefits our patients, and is something many other facilities do not provide. Depending on the case, we work with various types of surgeons, to ensure the best outcomes. Dr. Bellows is a nationally recognized expert in abdominal wall reconstruction and is actively involved with the Hernia Center in those patients with complex ventral hernias where synthetic mesh is undesirable. Patients have access to the expertise of all Tulane University surgeons and staff in one convenient place. In short, we bring the doctors to the patient instead of the other way around.
The physicians and staff at Tulane Hernia Center are internationally recognized experts in innovative hernia surgery and research. Physicians throughout the Golf Coast refer patients to the Center for our multidisciplinary care approach that includes a team of expert hernia surgeons and dedicated plastic surgeons with broad experience in abdominal wall reconstruction. In addition, patients may have the opportunity to participate in a variety of clinical trials. The Center is conducts clinical trials evaluating new prosthetic devices for hernia repair.
